Pool Demolition Work to Begin

Major demolition work will begin at the Katherine Aquatic Centre next week in preparation for its $10 million redevelopment.
Over the past few days, the Australian Government erected its project sign, Sitzler hoarding has fenced off the construction site, and heavy machinery is scheduled to arrive next week.

The contractor, Sitzler, completed the design phase and preliminary works through July and August, including setting up its construction facilities and securing subcontractor arrangements.

Mayor Lis Clark said a great deal of work has been done over the last two months, which has not been visible to the public, but the community will soon see some action on the site.

"It's hard to imagine progress is taking place when it's behind the scenes, but now the community will see the development taking shape over the coming months.

"While we understand it's frustrating to be without a pool through the wet season, we can't have this terrific project without that sacrifice."

The redeveloped Katherine Aquatic Centre, which is funded by the Australian Government, the NT Government and the Katherine Town Council, will include:

• the current 50-metre pool which will be extensively renovated
• a 25-metre, six-lane, 1.05 -1.4-metre deep, heated pool with an accessibility ramp, diving blocks on the deep end, and a ledge for learn-to-swim classes. The pool will be particularly suited to swimming lessons and fitness classes and it incorporates shading
• a splash zone with play area, activation toys, ground sprays and umbrella shades
• new plant and equipment rooms
• an assisted change facility to provide change room access to people with a disability.

As the demolition work progresses, members of the public are encouraged to stay alert and take care as more machinery moves on and off the construction site.
