Katherine Town Council Takes Clean Up Australia Online in 2025
Katherine Town Council is again shaking up its approach to Clean Up Australia Day, transforming it into a month-long online event from 2 – 28 March to make participation easier and more rewarding for locals.
Following the success of last year’s digital initiative, the Council will continue to use the Snap, Send, Solve app to encourage residents to clean up Katherine at their own pace throughout March.
In previous years, the annual clean-up event saw volunteers gather at Ryan Park on a Sunday to clear rubbish from the Katherine River corridor. However, participation had declined, prompting the Council to rethink its approach.
"We’ve seen fewer people attending the traditional clean-up event, so we’re giving people more time and flexibility to take part," said Council CEO Ingrid Stonhill. "This way, residents can clean up the areas that matter most to them, whenever it suits them throughout March."
Ms Stonhill emphasised that the initiative is about removing rubbish and raising awareness of proper waste disposal and recycling. "We encourage people to learn more about the recycling opportunities available in Katherine, including scrap metal, electronics disposal, car batteries, and the 10-cent container refund program offered by MT Bins."
By participating in Clean Up Australia 2025, locals can help protect Katherine’s environment, waterways, and wildlife while fostering a stronger sense of community. Participants are encouraged to spread the word by tagging their clean-up efforts on social media using #CleanUpKatherine and #CleanUpAustraliaDay2025.
To participate, residents can collect gloves and bags from the Civic Centre, collect rubbish at their favourite spot, snap a photo of their efforts, and submit it through the Snap, Send, Solve app. Participants will receive a $20 voucher for a local café or a movie pass with a small popcorn and drink.
