Katherine Town Council is pleased to announce that it has successfully secured $756,000 in funding from the Australian Government’s Active Transport Fund to construct a new shared bicycle and pedestrian pathway along Zimin Drive. The council will contribute the remaining $324,000 and co-fund this project, which is valued at $1,080,000.

The new 5.7km pathway will connect the existing pathway at the Low-Level Bridge to the Stuart Highway, forming a continuous loop that integrates with the Riverlink Trail and other pedestrian and cycling routes.

The project also responds to local residents’ representations to Council voicing concerns about cyclists having to share the road with road trains and vehicles towing caravans.

The shared pathway will feature:

  • A 2.4 m-wide sealed path for safe and accessible use by cyclists and pedestrians.
  • New road crossings to connect with existing trails, ensuring a seamless and secure active transport network.
  • Clear signage to delineate shared usage and promote safe travel behaviours.

The pathway will also significantly benefit local events such as the Katherine Ultra Challenge and the Katherine Run Festival, which attract hundreds of participants each year.

Mayor Lis Clark said the Council is committed to building a safer, healthier, and more connected Katherine. This investment in active transport will reduce road hazards, encourage physical activity, and enhance the quality of life for our residents.

Construction is expected to commence in the next couple of months, following the tender and design process. Katherine Town Council thanks the Australian Government for its support in delivering this important community infrastructure.
