Katherine’s disability community’s achievements were celebrated at the Disability Awards ceremony at the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre (GYRACC) this week. The event was coordinated by Katherine Town Council and marked the International Day of People with a Disability.

Mayor Lis Clark used the event to acknowledge the significant progress in local disability services, noting that the town now boasts a variety of service providers, specialised schools, and greater resources compared to earlier years when many residents had to seek support elsewhere.

Award winners:

Outstanding Person with a Disability

In the Outstanding Person with a Disability category, Anthony McGregor Brown was recognised for his commitment to learning, independence and goal setting. Anthony demonstrated his dedication to personal growth by excelling in programs like Healthy Cooking and gardening, volunteering at Katherine Research Station, and gaining independence by building financial literacy and exploring employment opportunities.

Outstanding Young Person with a Disability

The Outstanding Young Person with a Disability award went to Donna Coolwell, a young leader and advocate who inspires others through her volunteer work, mentoring, and community initiatives. Donna’s focus on ability over disability has made her a role model in Katherine.

Outstanding Support Person or Teacher

The Outstanding Support Person or Teacher award was presented to Fiona Nicholls, a Special Education teacher whose innovative approaches have created new opportunities for her students. Fiona’s work integrating inclusive curricula, establishing employment pathways, and supporting students’ development has set a benchmark for educational inclusivity.

Outstanding Service Provider

The Coffee Club was honoured for its inclusive employment practices in the Outstanding Service Provider category. By empowering young people with disabilities through meaningful work and fostering independence, The Coffee Club teaches valuable life skills such as respect, resilience and courage.
