Katherine Town Council has announced a three-week dog registration amnesty to help more lost dogs find their way home.
During the amnesty, Katherine residents can register their dogs at no cost from Monday, 3 February, until Monday, 17 February. The free registrations will be available for the first 100 applications received and remain valid until the annual dog registration renewals are due on 1 July 2025.
Mayor Lis Clark said the amnesty gives residents a cost-effective opportunity to have their dogs entered into the database.
“Dog registration is mandatory in Katherine, under a Council by-law,” Mayor Clark said.
“Unfortunately, we have seen an increasing number of unregistered dogs at large, which means we have little opportunity to identify their owners.
“If your dog is registered, your details will be on our database so we can contact you quickly. The owners of dogs that are not registered will also be fined.”
Residents can fill out an online form to register their dog and organise a time to collect the dog tag from the Civic Centre. Alternatively, they can come into the Civic Centre where staff will help with the registration process.
