Katherine Town Council plans to upgrade a section of First Street to improve safety around truck movements into and out of the shopping centre loading dock.
Delivery trucks must drive past the shopping centre's First Street entrance and reverse back down the street to access the loading bay. The proposed upgrade will allow them to move off First Street before reversing into position, improving vehicle and pedestrian safety.
The safety of people crossing the road into and out of the shopping centre carpark to workplaces and the courthouse has been a primary driver for improving commercial transport movements in this area.
Key Design Features:
- A new driveway access dedicated to commercial vehicles
- Narrowing of the existing driveway to better suit car use
- Clear pedestrian crossings through the crossovers and within the carpark.
Council's consultation with impacted stakeholders has received widespread support, particularly from transport companies. The project is now open for public consultation through to 12 January 2025.
Residents and community members can ask questions and make suggestions about the project through the Council's dedicated community engagement platform - Your Say Katherine.
