Katherine Town Council is inviting community feedback on shade structure options for the Town Square. The consultation, launched today on the Your Say Katherine website, aims to gather ideas to improve shade and comfort in the central outdoor space.
Background
In February 2020, then-Mayor Fay Miller announced the Council’s endorsement of a new CBD Revitalisation concept as part of the 2019 Katherine CBD Masterplan. Ashford Group Architects designed the plan to modernise and cool the town centre by introducing shady trees to create a natural canopy in the Town Square, formerly 50 Cent Park.
However, the selected trees have struggled to thrive in local conditions for four years, leaving the area without adequate shade. Acknowledging the need for a more comfortable and inviting public space, Council is now turning to the community members to hear what they would like to see in the Square.
Have Your Say
Residents are encouraged to share their ideas by submitting sketches, written descriptions, or photos of inspiring examples from other locations. All suggestions will be assessed based on affordability, sustainability, practicality, and ease of implementation.
To participate, visit Your Say Katherine to submit ideas, ask questions, and learn more about the initiative. Those unable to access the website can email their submissions to contactus@ktc.nt.gov.au or drop off written concepts at the Civic Centre’s front desk.
