Council Reinstates Commercial Scrap Metal Disposal Charge

At its last meeting on 22 October 2024, Katherine Town Council approved reinstating a scrap metal disposal fee for commercial operators.

Effective immediately, a charge of $74.30 per tonne will apply for scrap metal disposal at the Katherine Waste Management Facility.

This is a return to previous years when commercial businesses were required to pay for scrap metal disposal. The charge was temporarily waived following the 2024/25 fees and charges review when Council decided to cover these costs, allowing businesses to dispose of scrap metal free of charge, meaning Council absorbed the full recycling cost.

After a recent review of the Waste Management Facility's budget and a noticeable decline in scrap metal prices, it has become clear that the Council can no longer sustain this arrangement. Consequently, the disposal charge of $74.30 per tonne has been reinstated to ensure the facility's long-term viability.

Without this reinstated fee, there is a risk of scrap metal accumulation on-site, which could lead to increased operational costs. This, in turn, may result in higher fees and charges in the future as Council strives to cover the 2024/25 budget shortfall. Additionally, large volumes of scrap metal could reduce the facility's lifespan and disrupt recycling operations in the future.
