CEO Update - Why not stand for election to local government?

Published on Tuesday, 13 June 2023 at 8:14:58 AM

We need cultural diversity to reflect the different needs of community members. Diversity brings a variety of experiences to decision making, ensuring councils deliver the best outcomes for their communities.

Traditionally Women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with a disability and young people are under-represented on many local councils.  Whilst we have some of this covered here in Katherine, it really is important to make sure the voices of diversity are involved in the discussion, debate and decision making around what happens in Katherine.

Whether you are a blow in, local, resident or Kathernite, we would like you to share your knowledge and experiences with us at Council.   If you are passionate about your community, we encourage you to stand for the by- election. If you’re elected, you’ll have a direct say in decisions that impact future generations.

Being a councillor provides an exciting opportunity to make a difference. It’s also an opportunity to develop new skills and work with a diverse range of people.  Being ethical, open and honest are the key characteristics of being a successful councillor.  You also need to be keen to learn, be able to operate at a strategic level, be able to balance your council responsibilities, including needing time to read council business papers, attend meetings, and represent council at some events, with your home, family and work life.

If you are elected you will receive support to understand your role and be successful.  You will receive training from Northern Territory Government professionals, and on the job training at council.

There are some legal requirements to be considered to be eligible to stand for election.

You must:

  • be at least 18 years old and an Australian citizen
  • live or own property in the council’s area
  • be on the electoral roll for the council’s area
  • not be disqualified from standing for office, for example, if you have committed certain offences.

We have candidate information packs available at council’s reception desk.  We are happy to help with any questions.

We encourage everyone eligible, with a good strategic brain, and passion for our community to give it a go!

Good Luck, Ingrid
