Katherine Town Council’s Draft Municipal Plan for 2025–2026 is now open for community consultation. It outlines the Council’s priorities for the year ahead and invites feedback from residents, businesses, and stakeholders.

This year’s plan outlines a broad program of works and initiatives aimed at supporting Katherine’s growth, improving infrastructure, enhancing visitor experiences, and celebrating the town’s unique heritage.

Highlights of the draft Plan include:

  • Katherine Centenary Celebrations: In 2026, Katherine will mark 100 years since it was officially gazetted as a town. Council is planning a year-long program of events to honour this milestone, including a major community celebration, a formal Gala Dinner, and a grants program to support local groups in delivering centenary-themed events.
  • Enhancing the Visitor Experience: Several initiatives will strengthen tourism services in Katherine, including the relocation of the library to a more accessible location, co-locating the Visitor Information Centre at GYRACC, and a new operational role for Council at the Katherine Museum to ensure its sustainability and future growth.
  • Shared Pathway Strategy: Council will finalise and begin implementing a ten-year strategy to expand and upgrade shared pathways, improving mobility and safety for walkers and cyclists across Katherine.
  • Airport Masterplan: A new Civil Airport Masterplan will be developed through consultation with the community and stakeholders to shape future airport users and support advocacy with the NT and Australian Governments.
  • Solar Street Lighting Trial: Council will trial solar-powered street lighting in Katherine South to test more energy-efficient, reliable alternatives to existing infrastructure.
  • Tourism Transport and RV Parking Improvements: The draft plan includes a proposal to support a public bus loop for tourists and locals and new parking options to better accommodate caravans and RVs visiting the region.

Mayor Lis Clark said the Municipal Plan reflects Council’s commitment delivering the priorities outlined in Katherine 2027 Strategic Plan.

“Our 2025–2026 plan continues to invest in making Katherine a safer, more connected, and more vibrant place to live and visit,” Mayor Clark said. “We encourage everyone to review the plan and provide feedback on the priorities outlined.”

The Draft Municipal Plan 2025–2026 and proposed Fees and Charges are available for public review and comment for 21 days via written submissions or the survey on Your Say Katherine at www.katherine.nt.gov.au/yoursay. Submissions must be made in writing and can be lodged online, emailed to records@ktc.nt.gov.au, or delivered to the Civic Centre.
